New option includes memory and motor options
ROCHESTER, NEW YORK March 9, 2004 - EXFO Inc. (NASDAQ: EXFO, TSX: EXF) Photonics & Life Sciences Division announced today the introduction of a new option for the popular Gibraltar® platform, a complete mounting solution for the most popular fixed-stage, upright microscopes, used for cellular and molecular biology. The new motor/memory capability will increase success rates in sensitive electrophysiology research including multiple-patch experiments and photolysis of caged compounds.
The motor/memory option includes two memory positions. Memorizing a location is as easy as pressing one button. To return to that location, simply press the same button again.
The motor/memory capability can be ordered with all new Gibraltar platforms. It also is available as an upgrade kit to current owners of Gibraltar platforms. It can be fitted to an existing Gibraltar platform in a matter of minutes and normally without dismantling the current setup.
"Gone are the days when moving out of the field of view is plagued by the doubt that you may not be able to move back to your original location," said Allan Firhoj, Vice-President and General Manager of EXFO's Photonics & Life Sciences Division. "With our new motor/memory option for the Burleigh® Gibraltar platform, researchers can move back and forth without worry between different positions not in the field of view, saving lab time and reducing researcher stress. It is ideal for stimulating and recording in different fields of view or time-lapse imaging in two different locations."

Features PZT smoothness plus motorized long travel
QUEBEC CITY, CANADA, November 6, 2003 - EXFO Inc. (NASDAQ: EXFO, TSE: EXF) announced today the introduction of the PCS-6000 Micromanipulator for electrophysiology research. The new Burleigh® PCS-6000 adds motorized long travel to the popular PCS-5000 design, which incorporates Piezoelectric (PZT) technology for ultra-smooth, accurate motion. The combination of motorized long travel and PZT smoothness gives the researcher total control, providing maximum productivity in patch-clamp experiments.
The Burleigh PCS-6000's unique dual-axis capability offers researchers the optimum system for multiple-patch experiments. Stepper motors allow rapid coarse positioning to within 5 µm. EXFO's PZT expertise provides ultra-precise fine positioning with nanometer precision. Both aspects are accomplished with an ergonomic design that allows the researcher to focus on the experiment as opposed to the equipment.
Significant new benefits include:
- High, nanometer-level resolution for extremely precise positioning
- PZT design ensures extremely smooth, predictable motion
- Negligible drift for ultra-high stability
- Fast, easy pipette exchange increases productivity and reduces fatigue
"The extremely precise, fast, stiff and stable micropositioning available with the PCS-6000 comes from EXFO Burleigh Product Group's expertise in PZT technology," said Allan Firhoj, Vice- President and General Manager of EXFO's Photonics & Life Sciences Division. "For patch-clamp applications there's nothing smoother than PZT travel. The new PCS-6000 instantly translates the researcher's fingertip commands into smooth and predictable pipette motion without drift. Micromanipulators from EXFO Burleigh Products Group set the standard when it comes to total control."

FISHERS, New York, February 13, 1998- Burleigh Instruments, Inc. of Fishers, New York has entered into a distribution agreement with Olympus America, Inc. of Melville, New York. Olympus will be selling Burleigh's Gibraltar™ Family of Patch Clamp Micromanipulators and Microscope Platform Products in the USA.
Burleigh's Gibraltar™ Family of Patch Clamp Micromanipulators and Microscope Platform Products provide an integrated set of positioning solutions which meet the needs of the most demanding Life Science research requirements for stability, precision, and reliability. The addition of Burleigh's Patch Clamp Micromanipulators and Platforms to Olympus' product line will allow Olympus to offer a complete microscope solution to their customers.
Olympus markets a complete line of high performance microscopy and image analysis systems, including instrumentation for such techniques as fluorescence and video microscopy and micromanipulation/microinjection.
March 6, 1997 FISHERS, NY --- Burleigh Instruments, Inc. is pleased to announce the new Gibraltar Family of Patch Clamp Micromanipulator and Platform Products.
The Gibraltar PCS-5000 Series Patch Clamp Micromanipulator integrates Piezoelectric nanometer control into smooth, stiff, cross roller bearing stages. The result is a very affordable instrument featuring extremely smooth and predictable motion with negligible drift. The key application is patch clamp recording, allowing researchers to isolate ion channels on all membranes and measure the behavior of the channels under various forms of stimuli.
The PCS-5000 is the third in a series of Burleigh Piezoelectric-based products which have consistently improved the performance, reliability and affordability of patch clamp research. Piezoelectric actuators are solid-state ceramic structures which expand uniformly under applied voltage to produce extremely precise, fast, stiff and stable motion. Once a seal has been made on a cell membrane, the actuators hold their position, without drift, for hours at a time. This is a key requirement for patch clamp research and a primary strength of Burleigh Piezoelectric actuators. Burleigh is the world leader in the application of Piezoelectric technology in the Life Science market.
The Gibraltar Platform and X-Y Stage builds upon the solid-state stability of the PCS-5000 Micromanipulators. Increasingly, researchers are concerned with avoiding any motion of the cells under study, especially when multiple patches are being recorded. The Gibraltar Platform is mounted on four sturdy columns and has ample space for numerous manipulators, chambers and other devices to be installed around the microscope objective. The Gibraltar X-Y Stage, secured under the Platform, allows the microscope to move smoothly and precisely between fields of view without disturbing established patch recordings on the Platform.
Together, the Gibraltar Family of Micromanipulator and Platform Products provides a complete, integrated solution which will meet the most demanding research requirements for stability, precision and reliability.
May 15, 1996 Fishers, NY- Burleigh Instruments, Inc. is pleased to announce the new PCS-3000 series Patch Clamp Micromanipulators. The PCS-3000 Series offers extremely smooth and predictable motion with negligible drift for all patch clamp recording techniques or any other application requiring precision 3D movement. Fingertip commands are instantly and precisely converted to pipette movements.
Over 500 researchers have already discovered the increased productivity that results from using a Burleigh Micromanipulator. The PCS-3000 is the latest design that offers more flexibility and ease of use.
The secret to Burleigh's high performance is Piezoelectric technology. Piezoelectric actuators are solid ceramic structures that expand under applied voltage to produce extremely precise, fast, stiff, and stable motion. Burleigh is the world-leading expert in the application of this technology.
